AI Companion Voice Messages: What to Expect

In brief
On Tendera, you can speak your message instead of typing and choose to play a written reply from Sophia, Mia, Elena, or Jade. The text stays in the conversation. You can read one reply, listen to the next, and continue typing whenever that suits you. This is an exchange of messages, not a live phone call.

That distinction matters more than a microphone icon suggests. You might want to say something out loud without committing to an entire conversation aloud. Or you might prefer typing your own message and hearing the answer. Those are different choices, and neither requires you to give up the chat you already know.

Speaking and listening are separate choices

Voice input handles your side of the exchange. Record what you want to say, and the recording is transcribed into text for the conversation. Tendera does not store the raw microphone recording. That is a statement about the recording, not a claim that the resulting chat has no history.

In the mobile interface, the recording control says “Release to send · Slide up to cancel.” Sliding up changes the prompt to “Release to cancel.” If you change your mind halfway through a sentence, you have a way to discard it.

Reply playback handles the other side. An eligible character response has a “Play voice” control. During playback, that control shows progress while the written response remains on screen.

You do not need to speak in order to listen. You can type a question to Sophia, read her answer, and then play it. You can also use speech input and simply read the response.

The reply still belongs to the conversation

In one of our own test conversations, Sophia is asked which version of herself someone would meet late at night. Her reply mentions rearranging furniture at 2 a.m., talking to her cat Milo, and putting aside the performance of the working day.

The reply has a playback control, but those details remain visible in the message. You can look back at a sentence while the audio plays or return to the text afterward.

This is a useful distinction when choosing an AI companion. Audio does not have to turn the exchange into something fleeting. The message can remain a place to pause, reread, and decide what you want to ask next.

It also leaves the character writing open to inspection. A voice cannot establish whether a character has a specific point of view. The words still need to do that work. Our earlier same-message experiment with four characters looks at what those differences can mean in practice.

What works with which characters

Sophia, Mia, Elena, and Jade support generated playback of their saved replies. Custom characters support speech input, but they do not currently generate reply audio.

That means you can talk into the microphone while chatting with a character you created, then read their answer. Creating a character does not automatically give that character a generated voice.

If you are choosing between the two paths, you can meet one of the four Originals or create your own character. Both paths support written conversation; their reply-audio capabilities differ.

Trying voice without guessing at the limits

Voice requires signing in. A Free account includes three successful new character voice generations across the account. Saved audio can be replayed without using another generation, and failed generations do not consume that allowance. Premium includes character voice for normal personal use. The pricing page has membership details.

The account-free text preview is separate from that voice allowance. You can start by getting a feel for a character in text, then sign in to try voice.

Start with a response you actually want to hear. It might be a joke from Mia, or an answer from Sophia that you want to spend another moment with. There is no requirement to play every message.

A conversation at your pace

Sometimes reading is easier: you are around other people, moving quickly through a short exchange, or deciding how to phrase something. Sometimes you want to speak instead of type, or hear a reply without reading each line.

Voice messages give you those options inside the same conversation. The useful question is not whether you should switch to voice. It is whether you want sound for this particular moment.

Frequently asked questions

Are AI companion voice messages the same as a phone call?

No. Tendera supports recorded speech input and playback of written character replies. The conversation proceeds in messages rather than a live call.

Can I still type and read replies?

Yes. Voice is optional, and the written reply stays available when you play its audio.

Can custom characters reply with audio?

Custom characters support speech input, but generated reply audio is currently available only for Sophia, Mia, Elena, and Jade.

Can I try character voices for free?

Signed-in Free accounts receive three successful new character voice generations across the account. Replaying saved audio does not use another generation. Premium includes voice for normal personal use.
