Start With a Conversation

The first few messages can tell you more about an AI companion than a long feature list. Does the reply address what you said? Does the character have something specific to add? Do you want to send another message?

A convincing exchange does not need a dramatic scenario. Tell a character about a small moment from your day, ask about their interests, or disagree about a film. Notice whether the conversation develops or repeats the same reassuring phrases.

Listen for a Distinct Voice

A character's personality should show up in their replies. A thoughtful character might take time with a question. A playful one might tease you about an implausible excuse. Someone who cares about art should have more to say than a list of famous painters.

Look for details that belong to that character: work, routines, interests, opinions, and a recognizable rhythm. Those details give you a person in the story to get to know.

Check What Memory Actually Does

For an ongoing AI relationship, continuity matters. Mention a detail you are comfortable sharing, then return to it in a later conversation. Does the companion connect it to the right context?

Memory systems have limits. They can omit a fact, summarize it incorrectly, or fail to bring it back when it matters. A useful product should explain what it stores and let you manage your conversation data. Be wary of promises that it remembers everything forever.

Good conversation makes room for different moods. Sometimes you want a joke; sometimes you want to talk through a disappointing day. A reply that fits the moment is more useful than the same enthusiastic response every time.

Character consistency matters too. Opinions, interests, and personal history should give the conversation continuity, while leaving room for surprise. Natural dialogue and clear content boundaries can coexist; conversation quality is something to judge from the writing itself.
