Character.AI Bankruptcy: What Happens to Your Chats?

Facts checked: October 19, 2026.
Is Character.AI shutting down?
Character.AI says it is pursuing a court-supervised sale, with the process expected to finish around late November or early December 2026. If no proposal allows continued operations, it says the platform will wind down.
That estimated sale timetable is not an announced shutdown date. The announcement does not settle who might acquire the platform or what its future features would be.
You do not need to predict the outcome to make a useful decision today. Keeping a copy of writing you care about does not require abandoning the service. Start with the material you would miss most if you could no longer open it.
What should paying subscribers check?
Look at your next renewal date and decide whether the service available today still meets your needs. If you want to change your subscription, review the cancellation options available through the place where you subscribed. Keep the confirmation of any change you make.
Avoid treating a bankruptcy headline as confirmation that your own renewal has stopped. Check your account and receipts directly.
You can also separate the subscription decision from the preservation task: saving your writing is worthwhile whether you keep paying, cancel renewal, or wait for further announcements.
How to request your Character.AI data
On the website, follow:
Profile → Profile Settings → Account → Manage Account & Data → Export Data
Check for confirmation that the request was submitted. The download arrives by email, so confirm that you can still access the relevant inbox. Make a note of your request date and check the inbox while waiting.
Submitting a request is only the first step. When the archive arrives, download it, keep the original file, and open a copy to inspect it. An unopened download cannot tell you whether the conversations you wanted are actually there.
Will the export include every chat and memory?
The published export instructions do not provide a field-by-field inventory. Our suggestion is to create a separate, readable record of material you wrote and can still access.
For your own original character, that might include:
Give the document a date, identify which character it concerns, and keep it somewhere you can find again.
If another creator wrote the character, save attribution and your own notes. Check permission before copying or republishing their character writing. Be similarly careful with private information about other people.
Check the archive before calling the job finished
Choose a conversation you know well and look for it in the download. Check its dates and whether the parts you expected are present.
Then ask three practical questions:
Keep a short list of any gaps. If something expected is absent, describe the problem precisely when contacting support. Check the copy before deleting an account rather than assuming a requested export has already preserved everything you wanted.
These are our suggested checks, not a description of the export's guaranteed format.
What Tendera offers when you start fresh
Tendera combines automatically updated long-term memory with carefully written character personalities, helping each return connect with the person you have been getting to know.
As registered conversations develop, Tendera keeps important preferences, personal details, explicit corrections and meaningful shared experiences up to date in long-term memory. These work alongside recent conversation context, letting shared history carry forward across sessions without maintaining memory notes yourself.
The character's own writing matters just as much. Sophia brings reflective warmth, Mia quick wit, Elena dry humor, and Jade vivid sensory language. Each has her own background, opinions and way of speaking. That gives a remembered detail a personal response and helps the conversation feel natural and familiar.
You can try a conversation with Sophia with five Web messages before signup to get a feel for her voice. With an account, you can keep building the conversation and its shared history. Or write an original character of your own, bringing your background and dialogue style to the same automatic memory approach. Tendera is available on the Web, iPhone and Android, with the same account and conversation history; get the app for your phone.
Can you continue the same conversation elsewhere?
An archive preserves material you can revisit. It does not automatically make that material usable in another app.
Tendera does not currently import Character.AI chats, export files, or saved memory. Our guide to bringing your character ideas to Tendera explains how to use your own original notes when writing a character. The conversation you build on Tendera starts fresh.
To see how shared history develops, try the practical checks in our AI companion memory guide. Look for both continuity across sessions and a character whose way of responding feels recognizable.
Keep the archive you have checked and can read. It gives you a record of the writing you value while you decide what kind of conversation to build next.
